Following breeding season, black skimmers congregate into large flocks along southern coastal regions. This coastal bird is easily identified by its long, knife-like, red and black beak. The ‘Skimmer’ name comes from its method of fishing where it glides just over the waters surface, extending the exaggerated lower part of its bill into the water, hopping to snag unsuspecting prey.
