A collection of sanderlings line up along the shoreline. Buffeting from a coastal breeze gives the appearance that some are missing legs. Shore birds often tuck their legs up into the warmth of their feathers as seen in this photograph.  Sanderlings belong to the largest group of shorebirds known as sandpippers. Interestingly, these long distant migratory birds spend winters along sandy southern coastal areas and then migrate to the high arctic tundra to breed in summer months.
